The Bull's Head is a family run inn
offering excellent food and drink and comfortable Bed &
Breakfast accommodation in Castleton, Derbyshire, in the heart of the
Peak District National Park.
Situated in the beautiful Hope Valley, we are
surrounded by some of the most breathtaking natural views in the whole
of the UK. This makes us an ideal base for exploring the many different
attractions the Peak District has to offer.
We are located in the centre of the village of Castleton
with fine views of Mam Tor and Peveril Castle, which overlooks the
village of Castleton. The four major caverns of the area - Peak
Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff mine and Blue John Mine - which
are major tourist attractions, are all within walking distance.
Castleton is the ONLY source of the famous 'Blue
John' stone, which is sold at several outlets in the village. There is
also a small museum devoted to this stone - the 'Ollerenshaw
Collection'.
The Hotel is a natural haven for anyone doing a
walking holiday. From the doorstep it is a fine walk up Mam Tor, the
'Shivering Mountain', which overlooks the end of the Hope Valley.
Or you could walk over Hollins Cross to the nearby
Edale Valley, or make a circuit
over the low hills of Back Tor and Lose Hill. In fact, there are magnificent walks in every direction,
with long and short walks starting from Castleton or nearby Edale,
which is a five minute drive away.
A little further afield, Kinder Scout is the pinnacle of hills
in the Peak District - a magnet for serious walkers. This is usually
approached via Edale, but the more energetic could even walk from the
Bulls Head.
If you are interested in grand houses then Chatsworth House and Park and Haddon Hall are within 15 minutes by
road. Both are well worth a visit.
For more sightseeing or for walking, cycling or
fishing then the Ladybower and Derwent Dams are within
a 10 minute drive via Bamford.
There are some fine local towns. The picturesque
market town of Bakewell is within 15 minutes by car
– don’t leave here without a traditional Pudding.
The magnificent spa town of Buxton, with its Georgian Crescent
and fine Opera House is within 20 minutes
by car journey. There is a festival here every year in July.
Not far away is Eyam - the Plague village, which went
into voluntary quarantine in 1665 when the Plague was inadvertently
introduced from London via some second-hand clothes. There is a small
museum and you can walk around the village following markers of the
Plague.
